Tipping Culture is Getting “Out of Hand”

Tipping culture in the U.S. has gained a lot of attention in the media recently. Many people feel it has gotten out of hand. A woman sparked heated online debate about tipping after a trip to Subway in Washington.

The woman took to Reddit under the username u/CardiologistSilly926 to share her recent experience ordering a sandwich from Subway. She was automatically charged a $20 tip on her order from the fast food sandwich shop.

The conversation quickly got heated as commenters felt the addition of the tip on her order without her knowledge was an infringement on consumer rights.

The woman explained, “I do not tip where I have to stand to order my food, get my own drink and clean up after myself.”

Many people joined in the conversation and shared their frustrations with tipping fatigue as well. One user stated, “The customer was not obligated to leave a tip for a routine service and asking to adjust the bill was within her rights.”

Tipping Fatigue: the growing frustration and exhaustion of customers from being constantly prompted to tip.

Most people in the thread explained that they feel it should not be the responsibility of the consumer to tip in order for workers to make a livable wage. Rather, it is the responsibility of the employer to pay their employees a livable salary.
