With inflation on the rise, consumers are being more attentive than ever to their purchases. And while many have realized that some things simply aren’t worth it, others definitely are.

Reddit users weighed in and explained what purchases they considered the “best money they ever spent,” but not all financial experts agree with their choices.

    Collectibles Can Be Great Investments

Reddit user Applecity82 explained that he made a pretty penny as a teenager by buying a “bunch of football cards.” Essentially, he knew they were worth more than he was buying them for and considered them an investment.

And the finance specialists agree; because collectibles are highly valued, they can be a great purchase. However, it’s crucial to do a little research first and find out how much the items are actually going for.

Putting Health First with a Fitbit

Another user, NerdularNerdence, wrote, “A Fitbit Versa 2. It’s helped me lose weight and track sleep,” and that it was worth every penny because “good health is far less expensive than ill health.”

Of course, there are quite a few Fitbit models and other brand-name options out there, so before buying, shop around for the best deal. That way, you can save money and improve your health.

Several Reddit users wrote that they purchased a musical instrument such as a guitar or a ukulele, and that it was a fantastic buy since they love to play and they use it every day.

And expert Daniel Szczesniak agreed; he told GoBankingRates, “For those who are willing to put in the work, musical instruments are a great buy.”

    The Sweater Debate

Someone on Reddit reported that they bought several “ugly” Christmas sweaters this season and couldn’t be happier with their purchase.

However, Szczesniak replied that cheap, theme sweaters aren’t really a long-term investment. A much better idea is to buy a hand-knit and versatile sweater that will never go out of style and may just last a lifetime.

    Intentional Grocery Shopping

Everyone needs food, but one Reddit user felt that they best used their money “on groceries [to prepare] a meal for someone.”

And Szczesniak definitely agreed, stating, “The time, effort, and money you spend on blessing someone else will always be more memorable and meaningful than what you buy for yourself.”

    Investing in Your Home

A different Reddit user wrote, “As a first-time homeowner, my electric screwdriver/drill. Saved my wrist on countless minor things I have to do.”

Investopedia agrees that home improvement and tools can be a smart choice: “Remodeling can boost the return on investment (ROI) of a house.” Just be sure you know your market and don’t overdo the construction.

Homes today are filled with electronics, from smartphones to headphones to smart appliances and hubs. And most Reddit users agree that opting for higher-quality gadgets is definitely the way to go.

Instead of buying a cheap device that will break in no time, spend a little more the first time around to ensure it will last.

A different Reddit user said that the best thing they ever bought was TSA PreCheck, as it saves a whole lot of time as well as stress when traveling.

Experts report that while TSA PreCheck is certainly worth it for those who fly frequently. If you don’t, it may not be the best use of your money.

There’s Nothing More Important than a Good Night’s Sleep

When it comes to personal happiness, some argue that there is nothing more important than a good night’s sleep, and that means a good mattress.

In one debate over expensive mattresses, a Reddit user wrote: “I can tell you that purchasing a Tempur-Pedic mattress was the best decision I have ever made. Seriously.”

Whether you adopt from a shelter or purchase a cat or dog from a local breeder, having furry friends can definitely be expensive. But Reddit users agree that it’s absolutely worth it.

Hurricane_Surge wrote: “You shell out a few hundred and feed this animal, and in return, it gives you unwavering loyalty and undying love.” And what’s a better investment than that?
