    Popular Candy Sold at Big Box Retailers Recalled Over Salmonella Risk

    US health authorities have escalated a product recall on a popular candy.

    Palmer candy products are sold at several retail locations, including Target and Walmart.

    Initiating a Recall

    The Iowa-based Palmer Candy Company at first pulled their “white coated confectionary items.” 

    The products were recalled over a potential salmonella contamination risk.

    The recall was a precautionary effort on the part of the Palmer Candy Company.

    This action was taken in the wake of being told by its liquid coating supplier of possible contamination.

    FDA Update

    Last Aug. 6, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated the recall to Class 1.

    This is the most serious class covering products that represent a serious risk to health or death.

    Here is a rundown of the recalled products: Classic Yogurt Pretzels, Caramel Swirl Pretzels, Zebra Fudge Cookies, Enrobed Pretzel Rods, Cookies & Cream Yummy Chow, Favorite Day, Bakery White Fudge Mini Cookies, Frosted Patriot Frosted Pretzels.

    Further products include: Frosted Munchy Medley Bowl, Frosted Pretzels, Munchy Medley, Patriotic Pretzels, Patriotic Munchy Medley Bowl, Patriotic Red, White & Blue Pretzel Twists , Patriotic Snack Mix

    These products have been distributed across 17 US states and Canada.

    Other Brand Names

    Also, buyers have been warned about items under other brand names.

    These include Great Value, Casey’s, and Every True Tiger. 

    Salmonella Symptoms

    So far, no illnesses have been reported due to the recall warning.

    The majority of salmonella infections result in symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and fever.

    The symptoms can appear anywhere from six hours to six days after infection.

    The contamination can become serious and, even life-threatening for vulnerable people.

    Vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, as per the FDA.

    Even though most people recover on their own, salmonella infections lead to deaths and hospitalizations annually.

    400 deaths and 26,000 hospitalizations are reported each year in the United States alone as a result of Salmonella.

    For a full refund, customers who have purchased these items should return them to the store.

    Palmer Candy Company can be reached during business hours at 1-800-831-0828 if you have any questions or require additional information.

    The states included in the recall include Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

    As the FDA and the company continue their investigation of the issue production of the product has been suspended.
